In the Island of Gotbob, the basic unit of social organization is family. The government gives each married couple a piece of land to form nuclear families to encourage them to farm. The families in Gotbob are patriarchal. The male of the nuclear family is the head because he is the most productive member of the family. When the family grows bigger with the same ancestors, it is gradually forming villages. Social classes are based on wealth, education, and jobs. The 4 main social classes are scholars, traders, ordinary workers, and farmers. A person can move up to a higher social class by marrying into a wealthy family, getting a good education, and getting trained to be a skilled worker.
